CIJ, the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research on Justice, is pleased to invite you to the 2nd Conference of the CIJ Conference Cycle on "Crime, Security and Victimisation". This session, titled "EUROPOL’s Role in Preventing and Combating Organised Crime - Environmental Crimes”, featuring Jorge Jesus (EUROPOL’s National Expert), will take place on 11 April 2024, at 4pm (GMT), at FDUP’s And. 128 and via Zoom: https://videoconf-colibri.zoom.us/j/95235205529. Rita Faria (Assistant Professor at FDUP and Researcher at CIJ) will chair the session.

The conference will cover the following topics: (1) EUROPOL: organisation and activities; (2) EUROPOL's role in the security of the European Union and in the fight against organised crime; (3) environmental crime and EUROPOL's work in reacting to this organised crime. Rita Faria, the Chair, will also briefly present the work that has been carried out by the School of Criminology and the CIJ in the study of environmental crime in Portugal.

Jorge Jesus has a degree in Social and Political Science and, since 2020, has been a National Expert at EUROPOL, in the "EUROPOL's Environmental Crime Analysis" project of the Organised Crime Unit. Here he has dedicated himself to combating wildlife crime, especially that related to organised crime groups. In this context, he coordinates EUROPOL operations in situations of international wildlife trafficking, providing operational and intelligence support to national investigators. Between 2013 and 2020 he was at ASAE as leader of the National Criminal Investigation team, also with responsibility for investigating crimes against nature.
