António Manuel de Almeida Costa graduated from the Faculdade de Direito da Universidade de Coimbra (FDUC) on 17 February 1979 with a grade of Very Good with Distinction and Praise (18/20 points). In the same year, he was hired as an assistant by that Faculty, a position he held until 1997, when he moved to the Faculty of Law of the University of Porto.
In 1980 and 1982 he was a member of the Comissões de Revisão do Código Penal, chaired by Professor Eduardo Correia, whose work resulted in the Penal Code of 1982.
In 1984, he completed his Master's Degree in Legal-Criminal Sciences at Faculdade de Direito in the Universidade de Coimbra. Defending his dissertation entitled “Criminal Record - History. Comparative Law. Political and Criminal Analysis”, he obtained a classification of Very Good with Distinction and Praise (18/20 points).
In 1990, he collaborated with the Ministerial Commission, chaired by Professor Jorge de Figueiredo Dias, on the revision of the Portuguese Penal Code of 1982 which would result in the so-called Reform of 1995.
He participated annually, for over twenty years (until 2018 and 2016, respectively) in post-graduate courses at the Instituto de Direito Penal Económico e Europeu (IDPEE) and the Instituto de Direito Bancário, da Bolsa e dos Seguros (BBS), both at the the Faculdade de Direito at the Universidade de Coimbra .
In 2014, he was submitted to public exams for PhD in Legal-Criminal Sciences in the Faculty of Law of the University of Porto (FDUP), defending the dissertation "Personal unlawfulness, objective imputation and co-participation in criminal law", obtaining the maximum classification allowed by the regulations of the University of Porto then in force.
Since 2019, he has been a researcher at the Instituto Jurídico (IJ) of the FDUC, a FCT's accredited center, where he participates in the project "O Problema do Erro em Direito Penal", which is part of the "Vulnerabilidade e Direito" line of research.
On 12th of December of 2019, he was elected by the Assembleia da República Portuguesa as a member of the Conselho Superior do Ministério Público. In 2021, he joined the Conselho Geral do Centro de Estudos Judiciários (CEJ).
Since October 2020, he has been Director and Chairman of the Scientific Committee of the 2nd Cycle of Studies in Law at FDUP.
