Marta Chantal Ribeiro

Marta Chantal Ribeiro is Associate Professor at the Faculty of Law of the University of Porto (Portugal) and she is researcher on the Law of the Sea topics at the Centro Interdisciplinar de Investigação Marinha e Ambiental (CIIMAR, Universidade do Porto), as well as at the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research on Justice (CIJ). She holds a degree in Law and a master’s in European integration, concluded in the Universidade de Coimbra (Portugal). In 2011 she concluded the PhD on Law of the Sea at the University of Porto.
Since 2005, her research career has been focused on the conservation of marine biodiversity, especially marine protected areas, fisheries, deep-sea mining, marine spatial planning and maritime safety and security, including maritime crime.
 
To date, she has authored or edited over 50 scientific publications. Among other awards and honourable mentions, in 2011, Marta Chantal Ribeiro was distinguished with the 2010 Gerard Mangone Prize, announced in The International Journal of Marine and Coastal Law, vol. 26, no. 4, 2011, related to the article published, in 2010, in volume 25(2) 183-207, of the aforementioned journal, with the title "The 'Rainbow': The First National Marine Protected Area Proposed Under the High Seas", focused on the legal regime of a marine protected area in the Azores archipelago.
 
She has a long experience in cooperation and capacity-building projects as well as consultancy with East Timor and, since 2018, with several African countries of the Gulf of Guinea region.
