Course “Law, Sustainability and Responsibility: Rethinking Fundamental Rights and Duties in the Light of the SDGs and ESG Criteria”

FDUP, in collaboration with CIJ, is organising the Course “Law, Sustainability and Responsibility: Rethinking Fundamental Rights and Duties in the Light of the SDGs and ESG Criteria”, starting on 24 February 2026.

Comprised of three modules, totalling eighteen sessions delivered entirely online and synchronously, the Course aims to present the fundamental legal framework - national, regional, and international - of sustainable development. It approaches a set of legal-political questions arising from scenarios of environmental, social, and technological crisis, discussed in a dialogical format.

Duration: 3 modules, 18 sessions (6 sessions per module) – 27 hours. It is possible to enrol in a single module, two modules, or the full Course (three modules).
Format: Synchronous online delivery
Schedule: Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, 18:30–20:00
Modules:
Module I – Foundations and the legal-political framework of sustainability
Module II – Environment, climate justice, and biodiversity
Module III – Digitalisation | Education, literacy, vulnerabilities and powers
Certificate: A certificate of attendance will be issued to participants who attend 4 out of the 6 sessions per module, or, in the case of enrolment in the complete Course, 12 sessions. For certification purposes, full attendance is required. Participants joining online must keep their camera activated for the entire duration of each session.
Fees:
• General public: €175 (full course) / €75 per module
• Students: €130 (full course) / €45 per module
• Alumni: €150 (full course) / €60 per module

Objectives

• To present the fundamental legal framework - national, regional, and international - of sustainable development, based on a set of legal-political issues arising from environmental, social, and technological crisis scenarios, discussed in dialogue.
• To provide an integrated understanding of the relationship between Law and Sustainability, based on the Sustainable Development Goals and their implications for fundamental rights and duties.
• To elaborate the responsibilities of political actors and private companies in the context of the twin transition.
• To critically examine recent developments and proposed frameworks for emerging trends in climate litigation, intergenerational justice, animal welfare, and digitalisation in Education, Public Administration, and Justice.
